Meet the Members of Ester Volunteer Fire Department

Cameron Wohlford
Chief

Member Since the beginning of time
"I was inspired to join a department when I was 4 years old and my mom burnt herself on hot grease.  I joined EVFD on the advise of my old buddy Ben Bunge.  He was in the program and said EVFD was a good place for a student to be at because they did not have the military training style.  With my busy schedule, EVFD worked out pretty well and gave me lots of opportunities outside of regular training nights to excel.
My favorite thing about EVFD are the people.  They are my friends!!!"-Cam

"My brother, Will Bower inspired me to join EVFD. He joined EVFD when I was 14. I watched how much he enjoyed it and the cool things he was learning. Then I started to hang around the station with him and began to meet some of the people, which just added to my desire to be a member here. Thanks to the explorer program I joined EVFD when I was 15 years old.
My favorite thing about EVFD would be even though we are a small department that does not go on a ton of calls, when we do get a call they are always interesting. They somehow will stand out in your mind. I can remember most of the calls I have gone on with EVFD just because they were never really the same typies of calls. I guess it would come down to that and the member. We are a very close department. We all watch each others backs. That is not always easy to find in a volunteer fire department."

 "
I joined EVFD because I wanted to volunteer for a local department, And I was easily able to commit to volunteering while being a full time student. I like how the department encourages, but doesn’t force people to do things they don’t want to do like driving and getting promoted." -Haefalo

I joined because Ariana asked me to join the Ester Fire Dept. when I first moved up here in 2006 and I said I would, so I did a year later.  The best thing about the department are that the members are awesome and relaxed for the most part, the training helps move along the learning process so it doesn't take 100 years to be able to do awesome things like drive and operate rigs

"I was inspired to join because I wanted to help protect and serve my community. After attending my first Tuesday night drill at EVFD I felt like I fit in with this department and was encouraged by every member I spoke with that night to continue attending and to join EVFD.  EVFD is an amazing and supportive family. That is what I love about EVFD."

"I became a FF because I was bored in college and saw an ad in my dorm to join the local FD (in FL).  Figured it would be something fun to do (and maybe help pick up chicks...wrong) ultimately
joined Ester for the job.
Stuck around because its the best place to be a volunteer: relaxed atmosphere, free use of all the fire station facilities...really helps those in dry cabins."

"I joined the department because I burned down my friends beautiful sauna. Ester Fire Dept arrived and I saw how quick and incredibly nice they were, I liked them.  I always wanted to be a medic so I joined EVFD and become a firefighter too.
The best thing about the department are the people, the leadership, and the atmosphere to grow as a person.  It's also fun to crack not-so-funny jokes and people actually laugh (I think because everyone enjoys being around each other.)"

My father inspired me to join the fire service.  He has been a firefighter for 20 years, so I grew in the fire service.  My favorite thing about EVFD is the amazing group of people I get to work with every day.

"
I joined mostly because it looked like a fun thing to do and I wanted to use me recently gained (at the time) EMS skills.  The best thing about EVFD are the people, the layed back attitude but disciplined when it counts."

"I joined because I had a long involvement with the Board of Directors, then I was inspired to join the operational brigade by events of 9/11.
My favorite thing about this department are the people naturally, the teamwork and camaraderie are always present-in training and on the fire scene."-Mark

"I joined EVFD because I wanted to learn new skills, volunteer in the community, do something different than work.  My favorite aspects about volunteering are the the things we do, helping others, and especially the cool folks here at EVFD."

"I joined EVFD after discovering I lived in the Ester Fire District.  I served on a volunteer Emergency Medical Service before moving to Alaska and wanted to stay active in emergency response while serving my community.  I walked into the station for drill one Tuesday night, and knew I would be coming back every week.  The camaraderie and sense of community are the best parts of EVFD; however, I also enjoy training and expanding my knowledge of emergency response."

"I joined Ester Fire to give back to the community by being a part of a rescue service-to take part in saving lives.  EVFD gives the sense of family and I enjoy the intensity of trainings.  It's great to be able to learn so much as a volunteer with such a supportive group."
